Als driver vervoer je mensen of goederen veilig van A naar B. Afhankelijk van het type rit werk je met een bestelauto, vrachtwagen, bus of personenauto. Tot je dagelijkse taken behoren voertuigcontrole, laden en lossen, het naleven van verkeersregels en het bijhouden van ritregistraties. Contact met opdrachtgevers of passagiers en aandacht voor laden/lossen komen vaak terug in de praktijk. Het precieze takenpakket en de vereisten verschillen per soort vervoer: lokaal of internationaal, distributie of koeriersdiensten, personenvervoer of zwaar transport. Afhankelijk van het voertuig heb je het juiste rijbewijs en vaak aanvullende certificaten nodig, zoals een bestuurderspas of periodieke vakbekwaamheid (code 95). Ritpatronen variëren van dagdiensten tot onregelmatige diensten of meerdaagse ritten buiten de regio.

Wat past bij dit beroep? Drivers zijn nauwkeurig, punctueel en stressbestendig. Je moet veilig rijden combineren met efficiënt plannen en klantvriendelijk kunnen communiceren. Fysieke fitheid en basis technisch inzicht helpen bij laden/lossen en kleine onderhoudschecks. Voor internationaal of zwaar vervoer zijn ervaring met lange ritten en goede kennis van de regels voor rij- en rusttijden belangrijk. Waar let je op bij een vacature? Controleer welke voertuigen en routes van je verwacht worden, welke rijbewijzen en certificaten verplicht zijn en of de werkgever aanvullende trainingen biedt. Let ook op werktijden, contractvorm en of er sprake is van regelmatige overnachtingen of vroege/late diensten. Praktische zaken zoals reiskostenvergoeding en wie verantwoordelijk is voor werktuigen of hulpmiddelen zijn eveneens relevant. Hoe bereid je je voor op de sollicitatie? Zorg dat je rijbewijs, eventuele chauffeurskaart en relevante certificaten up-to-date en makkelijk aantoonbaar zijn. Zet in je cv concrete ervaring: welke voertuigen, soort routes en hoe lang. Vermeld ook relevante trainingen en verwijzingen van vorige opdrachtgevers of werkgevers. Tijdens gesprekken zijn voorbeelden van hoe je omgaat met onvoorziene situaties en klantcontact vaak doorslaggevend. Doorgroeimogelijkheden en specialisaties zijn er volop: van specialist in koeltransport of ADR tot planner, transportcoördinator of wagenparkbeheerder. Werkgevers bieden soms aanvullende opleidingen en trainingen aan; wie ervaring opbouwt en aanvullende certificaten haalt, vergroot de kans op meer uitdagende opdrachten en vaste posities.
