Join to apply for the Senior Instrumentation Engineer role at SBM Offshore.
Purpose
The Instrument Department is responsible for designing Process Control and Instrumentation Systems, Integrated Control & Safety Systems, Fire & Gas Systems, and Telecom Systems. In the FEED and subsequent Basic and Detailed phases, engineers define concepts and refine system details, integrate vendor data, and collaborate closely with subcontractors to prepare detailed documentation for construction, commissioning, and operation.
Responsibilities
- Valve Selection & Specification
- Continuously consider cost, constructability, operability, and maintainability.
- Specify and/or select appropriate valves (e.g., ball, gate, globe, check, emergency shutdown) based on process requirements and applicable Global Technical Standard (GTS).
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, classification requirements, client specifications, and regulatory requirements (API 520/526, API 6A/6D, API 609/607, NORSOK M-710, ISO 23936, ASME, etc.).
- Prepare/review technical datasheets, material selection, and pressure-temperature ratings; strong background in Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD) analysis.
- Relevant FPSO experience preferred.
- Instrumentation Engineering & Design Support
- Collaborate with the Technical Authority on design and development of new valve products or modifications.
- Perform calculations for flow rates, pressure drops, and material compatibility.
- Integrate valves into systems with instrumentation, process, mechanical, and piping teams.
- Safety & Compliance
- Ensure valves meet safety and environmental standards such as SIL. Understand IEC 61511/61508 or be trained as a functional safety engineer.
- Apply SBM Performance Standard for valves and instrumentation.
- Support HAZOP and risk assessment studies.
- Keep up-to-date with industry regulations and technological advancements.
- Testing & Inspection
- Supervise FAT, SAT, and hydrostatic testing.
- Ensure compliance with QA/QC processes.
- Troubleshoot valve-related failures and recommend corrective actions (e.g., Partial Stroke Tests, Staggered Blowdown Tests).
- Project & Vendor Management
- Support supply chain in valve selection and procurement strategy (qualifying vendors).
- Evaluate technical proposals, ensure product quality, review vendor documentation, drawings, and test reports.
- Maintenance & Reliability
- Provide technical support for valve maintenance, repair, and refurbishment (brownfield).
- Develop preventive maintenance plans and failure analysis reports.
- Implement reliability improvements for critical valve applications.
- Mentorship & Development
- Guide and coach junior valve engineers at SBM Rotterdam and other SBM locations.
- Provide input to engineering and technical standards for valve packages.
Education
- University or Technical College (BSc degree)
Experience
- At least 8 years’ experience in instrumentation valve engineering in the upstream oil & gas industry.
- Thorough understanding of international standards API 6A and 6D, ISO actuator requirements, API and ASME BPVC for pressure relief devices.
- Fundamental knowledge of control valves and relevant ISO/IEC standards required.
- Experience with control valve calculations (preferably with CONVAL).
- Fully competent in SmartPlant Instrumentation; Aveva Engineering experience is an advantage.
