We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager for our Payments Ledger Team within the Unified Platform organization. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in Java and distributed systems, with a solid understanding of ledger/accounting systems. You will make data‑driven decisions to balance technical debt, feature development, and operational stability, effectively managing long‑running technical projects that require a focus on scalability, reliability, and performance.

As a people leader with high emotional intelligence, you will foster a culture of safety, trust, and proactive problem‑solving. You will mentor and develop your team, focusing on their technical and professional growth while promoting automation to reduce manual toil. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are essential, as you will articulate technical decisions and timelines clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences, ensuring alignment and transparency across the organization.

In this role, you will work closely with other Unified Platform teams and product teams within Adyen to scale the core Payments Ledger that processed over a trillion euros worth of payments in 2024.

What You’ll Do

• Lead a team of 4 to 8 engineers that own, maintain and operate Adyen’s core accounting platform;
• Work with your team to design and implement strategies that will allow us to meet the demands of a rapidly growing payments platform;
• Have a multiplier effect by motivating team members and provide coaching in areas including but not limited to engineering best practices, scalable architecture design, product roadmap discussions;
• Maintain an inclusive team culture focused on autonomy, ownership, collaboration, communication, and impact;
• Collaborate with different teams to design and implement new services with reliability and scalability in mind;
• Set clear individual and team goals that align with our strategic engineering ambitions in close collaboration with the product manager;
• Create an inspiring and collaborative team environment with an open communication/feedback culture;
• Recruit new team members in line with the Adyen culture and required skills.

Who You Are

• An energetic self‑starter experienced in creating alignment between multiple teams;
• Distributed systems with high scalability, performance and reliability challenges excite you;
• Technical competency in software engineering using an object‑oriented programming language (Java) in a distributed system environment;
• You are able to define, implement and monitor performance KPIs to quickly identify opportunities for improvement in existing systems;
• Experienced in coaching and mentoring engineering talent;
• Experienced in leading technical projects in a fast‑paced environment;
• Experienced with collaborating with senior leadership to set strategic direction including product roadmaps;
• An excellent communicator and team player with strong management skills and technical aptitude;
• Must be willing to travel, both domestically and internationally, to meet with colleagues and/or merchant teams.

Minimum Qualifications

• 4+ years experience in managing engineering teams within a Java (or similar) environment;
• 8+ years of experience in software engineering industry in a fast‑paced tech environment;
• Experience working on accounting/ledgers;
• Full professional proficiency in English and excellent communication skills.
