Your Job
The Software Engineer R&D position focuses on developing and optimizing software solutions to enhance plant breeding processes, contributing to our digitalization strategy and supporting the development of innovative plant varieties.
Major Accountabilities & Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain software applications to support activities.
- Create and maintain data-analysis and integration pipelines to facilitate the processing and analysis of genetic, genomic and phenotypic data.
- DevOps leadership: Champion DevOps practices and their adoption across the organization.
- Assist in setting up a comprehensive technology development roadmap for plant breeding technology, supporting future innovations and improvements.
- Develop, optimize, and implement automated pipelines for core plant breeding processes using molecular, plant, or phenotype data.
- Scout for new external or public data or analysis technologies or develop them in-house to support plant breeding.
- Support the development of a data management strategy aligned across various crop teams, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
- Act as a supportive team member for R&D Technologies, contributing to discussions and initiatives and providing ad-hoc support for complex digital or molecular analyses.
- Participate in R&D projects relevant to plant breeding, collaborating with other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation.
- Identify digital bottlenecks and areas for optimization in breeding and technology teams.
- Support integrated approaches to technology development with colleagues in the Agricultural division of BASF
Your Profile
- MSc in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or related fields.
- Experience (5 - 10 years) in software development in a DevOps environment for plant breeding or related is preferred. Proven expertise in creating and supporting digital solutions for biological challenges.
- Strong ability to create scalable and maintainable software in Python and/or R. Knowledge of at least a compiled language (e.g. Java, C#) is a plus.
- Strong understanding of best practices in DevOps and ability structurally set them up them up in DevOps support tools (e.g. Azure DevOps).
- Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for data processing and analysis.
- Knowledge of Linux HPC environments and cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure).
- Basic knowledge of UI frameworks (e.g., Shiny, Django).

- Fluent in English, able to write technical reports, quality documentation and bring messages to stakeholders with different levels of technical knowledge about software.
