AIWerkplek develops a sovereign AI platform for organizations that work with sensitive data and operate under strict regulatory requirements. We enable AI adoption without dependence on public AI platforms, giving organizations full control over their data, models, and compliance. Our technology is already in use in regulated sectors such as legal services and is expanding into domains like healthcare. We are a product-driven company with a strong engineering culture, focused on building reliable, production-ready solutions. At AIWerkplek, technology directly impacts how professionals work every day.
You will join a small, highly skilled engineering team where collaboration and ownership are central. We work closely together from our office in Leusden, valuing in-person interaction and short decision-making lines. There is ample room to influence technical choices, architecture, and the long-term direction of the platform. AIWerkplek offers a competitive salary, strong benefits, a solid pension plan, and optional mobility solutions such as a company car. We invest in long-term growth—both of the platform and of the people building it.
As a Medior or Senior AI Software Engineer, you play a key role in building the core of our sovereign AI platform. You design and develop production-grade backend systems in Python, where AI and LLM functionality are not peripheral features but deeply embedded components of business processes and user workflows. The platform operates in regulated environments and follows a multi-tenant architecture with strict requirements around data isolation, security, reliability, and explainability.
In this role, you design scalable backend services and APIs that expose AI-driven capabilities in a controlled, predictable manner. You understand that LLMs are probabilistic by nature and therefore require carefully designed orchestration layers that enforce guardrails, validation, fallback strategies, retry mechanisms, and structured logging. You ensure that AI components are wrapped in deterministic system boundaries, making them reliable and auditable within enterprise-grade environments.
Beyond implementation, you actively contribute to architectural decisions regarding scalability, performance, resilience, and operational robustness. You think about system behavior under load, fault tolerance, and long-term maintainability. Observability is a natural part of your approach: you implement structured logging, metrics, tracing, and monitoring to ensure systems are transparent and measurable in production. You collaborate closely with other engineers and the technical architect, taking ownership of the quality, security, and stability of the solutions you deliver.
You have a strong background in backend software engineering with Python and are experienced in building and operating production systems. You are comfortable designing scalable service architectures and understand the importance of predictable behavior, proper error handling, idempotency, and graceful degradation. You have worked with modern Python frameworks and are familiar with API design, authentication and authorization mechanisms, containerized environments, and CI/CD workflows.
You understand how to design systems that are secure by default and operationally stable. Performance considerations, resource efficiency, and clean separation of concerns are part of your engineering mindset. You are able to translate functional requirements into robust technical designs that can scale over time.
In addition, you have affinity with AI-driven software and experience with—or a strong interest in—integrating LLM functionality into backend systems. You understand the architectural implications of embedding LLMs into applications, including prompt lifecycle management, response validation, rate limiting, cost control, and auditability. Experience with embeddings, vector databases, or retrieval-augmented generation concepts is considered a strong plus.
Depending on your level of seniority, you bring several years of relevant experience and are capable of clearly articulating and defending technical decisions in discussions with peers and architects. You take responsibility for the systems you build, think in terms of long‑term architecture rather than short‑term fixes, and enjoy working in a focused, high‑quality engineering environment.
You will work closely with a compact team of backend engineers, a technical architect, and business consultants. The team values clear communication, shared ownership, and pragmatic problem‑solving. Everyone contributes directly to the platform, from design and implementation to review and improvement. You can expect a supportive environment where technical quality matters and where your input genuinely shapes the product.
