Head of Software Engineering

As Head of Engineering at Shapeways, you lead a growing engineering team and own the MES/ERP platform that underpins our on-demand manufacturing. You will guide architecture, delivery, and cross-functional collaboration with operations, sales, and marketing. This hands-on leadership role blends people management with architectural impact, and you will drive AI-enabled workflows to accelerate development velocity and software quality. You’ll report to the CTO and shape the technical direction for a 40-service platform with a small but capable team.

• Lead day-to-day engineering operations across ~40 services to maintain delivery momentum
• Motivate, coach, and help hire as the team grows; define day-to-day workflows
• Prioritize AI investments and push adoption of AI-powered workflows across the org
• Own project prioritization and sequencing; translate cross-functional requests into executable plans
• Contribute hands-on by delivering features within established architecture and standards
• Serve as first point of contact for engineering questions and escalate architecture/infrastructure decisions to the CTO
• Ensure delivery visibility by tracking progress, surfacing risks early, and reporting status to stakeholders

• 2-4 years of experience as an engineering manager or team lead with mentoring responsibilities
• Strong hands-on experience with PHP/Symfony and relational databases (MySQL)
• Genuine interest in people leadership and creating a positive day-to-day environment
• Solid project management instincts to break down work and prioritize for a small team
• Experience working cross-functionally with operations, sales, and marketing; able to communicate trade-offs
• Experience with modern infrastructure practices (Kubernetes, GitOps, containerization)
• Pragmatic, get-it-done attitude with willingness to grow into broader leadership
