Software Engineering Manager - Infrastructure

What the role covers

This is a people-focused and technically involved role leading the Infrastructure Software team behind the FlexMetal bare-metal platform. The team builds and operates software powering the company\'s physical infrastructure, from global server automation to the client-facing portal. Responsibilities include coaching, architecture, and delivering scalable, reliable engineering outcomes in collaboration with Product and Technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of ~6 senior backend engineers (Go, PHP) through 1:1s, technical coaching, and performance reviews.
  • Translate product goals: work with Product Management to turn roadmap priorities into engineering requirements and delivery plans.
  • Provide technical direction: drive architectural alignment, design reviews, and hands-on participation in key system decisions.
  • Partner with leadership: collaborate with the Technical Director to shape growth frameworks, career development, and team autonomy.
  • Oversee modernization: manage the transition from legacy Laravel/PHP APIs to Go-based services, balancing scope, cost, and stability.
  • Ensure delivery excellence: oversee the full software lifecycle from design and testing to deployment and maintenance with platform engineer support.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: work with Platform, Network, Hardware, and Product teams to ensure smooth integration and customer outcomes.
  • Champion engineering culture: promote CI/CD, test-driven development, and a you build it, you deploy it, you support it philosophy.

Tech stack

  • Languages: Go, .NET, PHP (legacy) – core API in Laravel; new development in Go.
  • Infrastructure & tools: Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, GitLab pipelines, OpenSearch.
  • Databases: MariaDB (MySQL variant).
  • Practices: TDD, CI/CD pipelines, Agile workflows with a you build it, you deploy it, you support it mindset.
  • Scope: Systems span multiple data centers and integrate with hardware and network automation.
  • Services: Small, focused microservices for provisioning, QA checks, and state management.

About you

  • Experienced leader: 5+ years leading and mentoring senior backend engineers in production environments.
  • Technically hands-on: Strong backend background with Go or PHP; good understanding of API and service architectures.
  • Product-aware: Ability to translate product/business goals into engineering outcomes.
  • Infrastructure-minded: Experience with systems spanning data centers, hardware provisioning or network automation.
  • Skilled in tooling: Proficient with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible, and GitLab pipelines.
  • Architectural thinker: System design and modernization with reliability and cost considerations.
  • Collaborative partner: Works with Product and technical leadership to align strategy and execution.
  • Quality-focused: Understanding of TDD, CI/CD, and reliability engineering.
  • Excellent communicator: Clear and empathetic communication across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Location: Hybrid role based in Rotterdam; relocation support available within the EU (work permit required).
