War Child Alliance is seeking a Head of Finance to join its leadership team in Amsterdam. You will shape and strengthen the Alliance’s financial future, ensuring resources are managed effectively to maximise impact for children affected by conflict.
Overview
As a strategic, values‑driven finance leader you will oversee the full financial cycle: planning, reporting, control, risk management, and compliance across a dynamic, international organization. You’ll partner with the Board, International Management Team (IMT), country teams, and fundraising staff to provide timely, accurate financial insight that informs key decisions.
Responsibilities
- Annual financial cycle – Lead budgeting, reporting, reforecasting, year‑end processes, and production of financial statements.
- Execute scenario analysis and contingency planning.
- Support consolidation of financial data for internal decision making and external accountability.
- Ensure continuity of statutory financial information and improve management dashboards, reports, and KPIs.
- Design and implement a management accounting system; provide analysis to leadership and advise the IMT and Board.
- Maintain financial information systems, resolve bottlenecks, and monitor group obligations and liabilities.
- Manage treasury functions, report bank and currency risks, and provide advice to stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain financial performance metrics.
- Identify qualitative risks, integrate them into audit plans and individual audits.
- External audit – Lead the statutory audit process, liaise with auditors, guide audit planning, and manage responses and follow‑up actions.
- Create and monitor financial management, accounting, and internal control policies; advise senior management on compliance.
- Represent Finance at the IMT, Finance Working Group, Board Audit & Risk Committee, and full Board meetings.
- Foster cross‑functional collaboration, align objectives across departments, and develop stakeholder capacity.
- Oversee the development and continuous improvement of financial management and reporting systems, and collaborate with ICT on automation.
- Lead people management: mentor, coach, staff planning, performance management, and create a culture of safeguarding children and adults.
Qualifications
- At least 10 years of experience in a similar role.
- Comprehensive knowledge of finance, planning, and control in international NGOs.
- Proficient in fund accounting, cost recovery models, Dutch GAAP (RJ640, RJ650), and IFRS.
- Experience designing, implementing, and upholding financial and risk management principles.
- Awareness of legal and compliance risks in an international NGO context.
- Inclusive leadership that supports collaboration, clarity, and accountability.
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Master’s degree (MBA or MSc) in Finance, Controlling, or Economics, or an equivalent qualification.
- Professional accounting designation (RA, RC, or CPA) is an advantage.
- Fluency in English; proficiency in Dutch, French, and/or Arabic is desirable.
What We Offer
- Location: Netherlands (no relocation or visa sponsorship).
- Salary: €5,750 – €7,149 gross per month (based on 40 hours per week).
- Contract: One year, renewable on funding and performance.
- Annual leave: 29 vacation days (consisting of 26 days plus 3 fixed free days).
