Your role in the story:

As Engineer 2, you play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our SSCV’s, the world’s largest crane vessels.

During your watch, you inspect, maintain, and repair machinery and equipment in the engine room. You report defects and unsafe conditions immediately, and you make sure all activities are executed safely and according to procedures.

You will assist the Engineer 1 with repair and maintenance tasks, take on independent responsibilities, and ensure accurate administration of your work. During shift handovers, you clearly communicate the work performed and any issues identified.

You’ll also collaborate closely with the electrical department and the deck team, ensuring that vessel operations run smoothly and efficiently. Once you’ve gained sufficient experience, you’ll contribute to deck-related technical work and provide support during complex offshore operations.

What you will be working on:

• Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing engine room systems and auxiliary equipment
• Supporting deck and construction activities by operating compressors, Hydraulic pumps, hydraulic hammers and ILT’s
• Assisting in the operation and maintenance of lifesaving and safety systems
• Reporting unsafe conditions and ensuring compliance with safety procedures
• Coordinating with electrical and mechanical colleagues to ensure vessel readiness

Key ingredients for success:

• Maritime or technical vocational education (MAROF or equivalent)
• 2–5 years of experience as Engineer onboard an offshore or DP vessel
• Strong problem-solving mindset and sense of responsibility
• Excellent command of English, both spoken and written
• Proactive, safety-driven, and results-oriented attitude
• Team player with the flexibility to work in dynamic offshore conditions

Curious to meet your future crew? On our SSCV’s, the engine room is the beating heart of the operation. At Heerema, on our SSCV’s, the engine room hierarchy is clearly defined to ensure smooth and efficient offshore operations:

Oilers (5x) → Mechanics 2 (2x) → Mechanics 1 (2x) → Assistant Engineers (2x) → Engineers 2 (3x) → Engineers 1 (3x) → Assistant Chief Engineer (1x) → Chief Engineer (1x).

All positions, except for the Assistant Chief Engineer and Chief Engineer, are divided per shift to guarantee continuous 24/7 operations.

In addition to the engine room crew, you’ll work closely with our Electrical Team, which consists of Assistant Electricians (2x) → Electricians 3 (3x) → Electricians 2 (2x) → Electricians 1 (2x) → Marine Automation Engineer (1x) → Chief Electrician, and with the Stores Department, including Chief Storekeeper (1x) → Storekeeper 1 (1x) → Storekeeper 2 (2x).

Since several activities overlap with the electrical department, close collaboration between both teams is essential. You’ll also ensure proper stock control and administration of spare parts in coordination with the general warehouse. When parts are unavailable on board, you’ll consult your supervisor to ensure timely ordering and delivery. Once you have gained the required experience and competencies, deck-related work will also become part of your responsibilities. When assistance is required from an Engineer 1 on deck, you’ll be part of the deck team to support operations as needed.

The application process consists of two interviews, an online assessment, and an employment offer.

• The first interview will be conducted via Microsoft Teams with the Chief Engineer, giving you the opportunity to learn more about the technical aspects of the role and life on board our vessels.
• The second interview will take place at our office in Leiden, where you’ll meet additional team members and get a better feel for our culture and working environment.

As part of the process, you will also complete an online assessment, which will take place either before or immediately after the first interview.
