Senior Process Engineer (Plasma)

Join SMART Photonics, a rapidly growing and ambitious open foundry specializing in Indium Phosphide (InP) photonic integrated circuits. We are at the forefront of photonics innovation, enabling next-generation technologies in data communication and telecom applications.
We are seeking a Senior Process Engineer (Plasma Deposition & Dry Etch) with strong expertise in data-driven problem solving and Lean Six Sigma methodologies to strengthen our team. This is a challenging and operational role where you will add value to the process team, drive continuous improvement initiatives, release new equipment, develop advanced processes, and train the operations team.
Role
As a Senior Process Engineer (Plasma), you will take a hands-on role in improving Plasma Deposition (PECVD) and Dry Etch (ICP, RIE) processes, with a strong focus on Statistical Process Control (SPC), data analysis, and Lean initiatives. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Equipment, Operations, Integration, Design, and R&D to enhance process stability, yield, and cost efficiency, supporting high-volume manufacturing.
Tasks
  • Lead SPC monitoring and data analysis for Plasma Equipment and Processes, identifying trends and driving corrective actions.
  • Apply Lean Six Sigma methodologies to reduce non-conformities and improve manufacturability metrics.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects focused on process optimization, equipment performance, and defect reduction.
  • Lead and optimize plasma processes (etching, deposition, cleaning) on advanced platforms such as ICP, RIE, and PECVD.
  • Execute Design of Experiments (DOEs) to refine process windows and improve critical metrics (e.g., CD, uniformity, selectivity).
  • Perform root cause analysis on process deviations and defects; implement effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with equipment engineers to ensure optimal tool performance, configuration, and uptime.
  • Maintain and improve plasma processes used in photonic chip fabrication, including documentation, control plans, and SOPs.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to improve yields, streamline processes, and support the qualification of new tools and technologies
  • MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in process engineering, in a semiconductor or photonics fab.
  • Strong background in data analysis, SPC, and process monitoring. Experience with tools like JMP, Python, or Minitab valued.
  • Proven experience in Lean initiatives and Six Sigma (Green Belt certification preferred).
  • Hands-on expertise in plasma deposition and dry etch processes (PECVD, ICP, RIE).
  • Solid understanding of semiconductor fabrication processes and familiarity with metrology tools (e.g., SEM, profilometry, ellipsometry).
  • Skilled in root cause analysis and process troubleshooting, with experience supporting fab operations and training.
  • Driven to collaborate, solve problems and continuously improve.

If this aligns with your experience and passion for advanced plasma processing, we’d love to hear from you. Come join us in pushing the boundaries of photonic chip technology.
